A wide range of B.A. students and those enrolled for vocational
degrees such as Law, Medicine, Music or Commerce take papers
in Theatre Studies. In addition to the study of dramatic theory
and practice, our courses teach skills which are widely applicable
across a range of careers and disciplines, such as creativity,
communication, originality, imagination, lateral thinking,
confidence, concentration, physical, vocal and team-building
skills.
Theatre Studies graduates go on to employment in careers
such as teaching, TV/radio journalism, law, advertising, marketing,
broadcasting, acting for TV/theatre/film, technical work,
design, music, arts administration, publicity, script writing,
film-making or further training in drama-related fields.
Comments from our students and graduates may help you get
a sense of the value of studying Theatre...
"Theatre Studies graduates have made their presence
felt in the creative scene in New Zealand. They end up having
an incredible diversity of creative experience. Diversity
keeps you employed. It makes you better at any creative job
because you have an insight into the whole production process."
- Vanessa Alexander
(director of feature film Magik and Rose; producer of TV3s
Being Eve)
"Theatre Studies at Allen Hall really helped me to find
my niche at University. Before I came to Theatre Studies,
I bounced around from subject to subject without finding anything
to keep me interested. Allen Hall is a warm, caring place
where the lecturers actually care about the students, a rare
thing at Unis these days. The broad range of topics and opportunities
that Theatre Studies provides to its students are second to
none. Id recommend to anyone to discover theatre at
Allen Hall. Its my home away from home and it could
be yours too."
- Toby Heal (BA)
"Amongst all the tertiary studies Ive done, Theatre
Studies stands unchallenged as the most enjoyable, exciting
and rewarding. Theatre Studies helped me see the world in
a new way. As a teacher, I draw constantly from the skills
that Theatre Studies has given me. Teaching demands creativity,
reflexivity and at times pure performance skill and confidence.
Theatre Studies was a wonderful preparation for teaching,
and for the challenges and opportunities that life throws
up."
- Ruth Wheeler (BA)
"The presentation skills I have learned in Theatre Studies
will definitely help me in the job market."
- Bengamin Barsanti (BA/BCom)
