Profile of International Student
Sin Hang Cynthia Wun
I am Cynthia from Hong Kong. Feeling too stressed with the fast pace at home, I decided to escape and landed in New Zealand. I have always loved to hang around people and know more about them, so I decided to take a double major in Psychology and Theatre Studies. Theatre Studies is not offered in any of the universities in Hong Kong, as far as I know.
Don’t know western culture or Shakespeare well? Not a problem here! My lecturers and tutors are very kind and they don’t mind spending spare time with me, going through the materials, making sure I understand everything.
Some say Dunedin is a boring place; I say Dunedin is a place full of opportunities. Having a small population, I have more chances to participate in theatre, even if I’m a novice and not particularly good at English. What’s more, we have Lunchtime Theatre at Allen Hall Theatre! Three bucks to get you into a performance, what else can I ask for? Also, having Allen Hall Theatre easily accessible, I’ve got the chance to learn more than acting – the backstage part!
With quite a number of theatres in this “small” town, I have seen some awesome productions, including the most recent Miss Saigon at the Regent Theatre. The theatre itself is a piece of artwork. Having no experience of watching such a large production, the show was undoubtedly amazing for me!
Theatre is more than acting or putting stuff on stage; it’s about appreciation of life.
