Workshops / Seminars
Steven Blair
Fitness, Fatness, Obesity, and Health Outcomes
In this workshop, Steven will review the research on the role of activity or fitness in ameliorating the health hazards of obesity. Much of the research on obesity and health outcomes fails to take activity or fitness into account; and if activity is mentioned it is often measured so poorly that proper statistical adjustment is not feasible. Part of the seminar also will address how to implement cognitive and behavioral interventions to help individuals become and stay more physically active.
Paul Campos
The epidemiology of overweight and obesity
In this workshop, Paul will encourage participants to critically examine the epidemiology of overweight and obesity. He will interrogate existing data and the controversies surrounding it, affording participants a 'fresh' and 'critical' understanding of the weight of evidence accumulated thus far about obesity,
Michael Gard & Lisette Burrows
Thinking and teaching about the 'obesity epidemic'
In this workshop Michael and Lisette will engage participants in activities designed to encourage teachers/lecturers to work with students in thoughtful and rigorous ways in relation to obesity knowledge. They will suggest that no matter whether teachers are skeptical, alarmist or critical of obesity 'facts', there is little point in "shoving their position" down students' throats. Tools for navigating the abundant claims and counter claims about obesity will be discussed. The workshop is aimed at teachers of any description who work with students on obesity-related projects. It may also be of interest to social workers, nurses, doctors - anyone who is involved in communicating knowledge about obesity to others.
Nanette Mutrie & Elaine Rose
Conducting physical activity consultations
In this workshop Nanette & Elaine will lead participants through a series of practical activities, based on social cognitive theories of behaviour change, that have been shown to be effective in helping people become more physically active. The activities will include: identifying needs, assessing current physical status, decisional balance, identifying and overcoming barriers, developing appropriate goals, establishing support, self-monitoring, relapse prevention.
Micheal Jenson & Lynnette Jones
Prevention, management and treatment of obesity
In this workshop Mike Jenson will discuss the role of physical activity in managing and preventing obesity. He will focus on practical ways to increase physical activity in sedentary adults and discuss approaches for the truly "deconditioned" obese adult. In addition this workshop will highlight clinical strategies used to treat obesity.
Jonathan McGavock & Sandy Mandic
The role of kinesiologists/exercise physiologists in chronic disease management clinics and centres
In this workshop, Jon and Sandy will discuss the role that kinesiologists and exercise physiologists play in multidisciplinary teams involved in chronic disease management. In particular, the workshop will focus on the role of kinesiologists in diabetes clinics and cardiac rehabilitation programs. This workshop is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and any health professionals interested in working in chronic disease management clinics.
