Scientific design: three approaches
that check each other
Computer simulation models will be used to predict
harvest impacts based on survival, reproduction and
migration data collected from harvested and unharvested
islands. We are also monitoring population changes on
several other islands to test the model's predictions. Titi
abundance on 20 harvested sites and 8 unharvested colonies
will also be compared for a further rapid check for
large-scale harvest impacts.
If the computer model accurately predicts the changes in
Titi abundance that we observe at our monitoring sites, it
will be used to evaluate the effects of different harvest
levels and potential future management responses for the
kaitiaki (guardians) of the harvest.
