If you are:
- a Year 13 student and you have not met entrance requirements.
OR - 18 years of age by the first day of formal classes in the course you have applied for and not have been enrolled in a high school in the year before admission to the programme.
You are eligible to apply for admission to the Certificate in University Preparation (CUP).
The University of Otago Certificate in University Preparation has been designed to provide you with another opportunity to gain entry to the University of Otago.
The course also provides a way for you to explore your options for further study, particularly if you require an introduction to the skills needed for academic study at university level.
The course is 15 weeks in duration - one semester including examinations. There are three intakes, February, June and October. All students will have their results in time to begin the following semester at the University of Otago.

Gaining Entry
Entry is based on either NCEA or Bursary grades depending on when you were at high school. We contact all students for a short telephone interview and we welcome you to come and see us to discuss your application.
NCEA Level 3
12 credits in each of 2 conventional school subjects
+
14 credits over another 2 conventional school subjects, with no less than 6 credits in a subject.
English Requirement
NCEA Level 2, 8 credits
OR
NCEA Level 1, 12 credits
Numeracy Requirement
NCEA Level 1, 14 credits in Mathematics or Pangarau
OR
Approved equivalents
New Zealand Bursary
Entry is based on you having sat Bursary subjects and gained 'C' grades in at least two relevant subjects. If you are in this category, you may apply for admission to the Certificate in University Preparation.
If you are a Permanent Resident, you should have have achieved a 'C' grade pass in an English language based Bursary paper or you will need a current IELTS of 6.0 overall.
Assessment
You will be given a final grade for each subject based on a combination of internal assessments and a final examination. Internal assessment work may include essays, research projects, presentations and laboratory work.
Entrance to the University of Otago
The University of Otago will accept you into an undergraduate programme in Science, Commerce or Arts if you have completed the course and attained a C average across all subjects including a minimum C grade in the Academic English paper.
When does the course start?
Foundation Year is situated on the University of Otago Campus in Dunedin. When you study for the Certificate in University Preparation at Foundation Year you have most of the same privileges and use of facilities as other university students. You will have your results in time to begin the following semester at the University of Otago.
Fees
The tuition fee is NZ$1838 and there is a NZ$250 administration fee which covers the Welfare Services and Recreation Fee, Internet Access Fee, OUSA membership and Student ID Card.
No deposit is required. Fees are subject to change.
Payment can be made by Bank Cheque, Telegraphic Transfer or through StudyLink (evidence that you have applied for assistance through StudyLink will be required before enrolling in the course). For details on how to do this please contact Foundation Year.

Minimum Student Numbers
Classes need a minimum of 8 students to begin. If there are insufficient numbers, students will be offered other options or the ability to withdraw with a full refund of fees.
