StudyLink Frequently Asked Questions for Students
Process for new students enrolling in Foundation Year
The following applies if you have never enrolled at the University of Otago:
- Complete a new StudyLink application up to the 'contract' stage (before Foundation Year registration). The University ID number is required but the reference number on the Foundation Year offer letter is NOT the University ID number. The University ID number will only be generated after Foundation Year registration.
- Complete Foundation Year registration (during Orientation week). You must provide your passport/NZ birth certificate (or certified copies) and StudyLink contract.
- Foundation Year registration details will be sent to the University for processing (which can take up to 5 days).
- Your status on the system will now be 'pending'.
- You will receive a course approval form to be signed (after the course commences).
- Signed course approval forms will be returned to University for processing.
- Once course approval is complete your status will be verified and the VOS (StudyLink's verification of student) will automatically approve.
- Your loan/living costs will be accessible.
Process for students who have withdrawn from the University of Otago and are enrolling in Foundation Year
The following applies if you have a withdrawn status on the University system:
- Complete Foundation Year registration (preferably before Orientation week). You must provide your passport/NZ birth certificate (or certified copies).
- Foundation Year registration details will be sent to the University for processing (can take up to 2 days).
- Complete new StudyLink application after the University has processed Foundation Year registration. You must provide us with your contract as soon as you have it.
- Your status on the system will now be 'pending'.
- You will receive a course approval form to be signed (after the course commences).
- Signed course approval forms will be returned to University for processing.
- Once course approval is complete your status will be verified and the VOS (StudyLink's verification of student) will automatically approve.
- Your loan/living costs will be accessible.
Problems with StudyLink
All students applying for StudyLink funding should ensure they have sufficient funds for at least one month's living expenses as it may take a few weeks for funding to be finalised.
