Introduction to University Entry Requirements
When you study at Foundation Year, you are given a provisional offer of enrolment in a particular course at the University of Otago. If you achieve the required final grades in the University of Otago Foundation Year, you may go directly to that course. If you do not achieve the entry requirements for the course you would like to study you are offered a place in another course for which you are qualified.
You may wish to change your university course. Towards the end of the Foundation Year, you have the opportunity to choose another course.
Admission Requirements to University
To proceed to university, you need to have:
- a minimum GPA
- a minimum grade in Academic English
- special requirements in some courses, such as a minimum grade in Mathematics
You can find these requirements in our University of Otago Foundation Year Prospectus, which can be mailed out on application.
You can also contact the Foundation Year Office for details on university courses and requirements.
You can begin your university study at the University of Otago at the end of either the February or June intakes in the following year starting in Semester One.
Studying at Other New Zealand Universities
If you want to take a course at a different university in New Zealand or Australia, you will not receive an initial provisional offer from the University of Otago Foundation Year programme for that university.
This is because entrance requirements differ amongst universities but the University of Otago Foundation Year is recognised as an entrance qualification by all New Zealand Universities, and most in Australia.
If you intend to go through to a university other than Otago or New South Wales after the Otago Foundation Year, you are advised to make enquiries with that particular university, as there may be some special subject requirements for your preferred course.
