English for Teachers who have English as a Second Language
This is a professional development course for teachers of English who have English as their second language. The course focuses on self-improvement in English language and classroom language skills.
Course Structure
This course has three components:
- An online analysis of the learner's English needs. Students complete a series of tests, including speaking. Tests are marked at the University of Otago Language Centre.
- A preparatory 50 hours distance learning programme.
- A 180 hour six week residential course at the University of Otago Language Centre.
Course Content
This course teaches reading, writing, listening, speaking and classroom language. The classroom language section covers modern communicative approaches, basic lecture style teaching, and a variety of strategies that can be applied to most classroom situations. Visits to schools provide an authentic background to the role play used to practise language skills.
Statement of Achievement and Completion
A University of Otago Language Centre Statement of Achievement and Completion will be presented to candidates on completion of the English for Teachers course. This will include a detailed description of each individual's overall language proficiency levels.
Class Commencement
In order for the course to proceed 10 students must enrol.
Cancellation of the Course
A decision will be made eight weeks before the course starts, regarding whether or not the course will proceed. Students will be required to pay a $200 deposit to secure a place on the course, which is refunded if the course is cancelled. The full fee must be paid within two weeks after the decision day.
