What happens on your first day at the Language Centre?

Where is the Language Centre?

The Language Centre is located at 75 St David Street at the entrance of the University of Otago. If you have difficulty finding us you can telephone us on 03 479 5250 and we will help you.

What time do I need to be at the Language Centre?

Please be at the Language Centre by 8.45am. Come to the reception area on Level 2 to meet Clare our receptionist.

What do I need to bring?

What happens next?

Staff from the Language Centre will welcome you and take you to a classroom where you will be given an English test. We call this the placement test. Once the test is completed, staff will grade the test and place you in a class with other students who are at a similar level to you. There is a maximum of 16 students per class.

What happens next?

You will have an orientation to the Language Centre, which includes enrolling with student support officers and meeting our homestay staff. You will be given a welcome pack and a brief overview of the services at the Language Centre. A photo of you will be taken which we will put on our database. We will take a photocopy of your passport and give your passport back to you. Staff will take you to one of the university cafes for an early lunch. After lunch you will start classes at 12 noon. Meet at reception on Level 2 to find out which class you are in. You will be given your timetable and books.

Later in your first week student support officers will talk to you about banking, transport, and life in New Zealand. They will take you on a tour of the campus. They offer support and help when you need it during your time at the Language Centre.
