What is distance-teaching?

Distance-taught papers can be studied from anywhere. Papers are taught using online resources through an e-learning platform, supplemented by Zoom videoconferencing in the evening and one compulsory residential held in Wellington.

What time commitment is required?

The papers are designed to be taken part-time while continuing to work in practice.  As a general guide it would be expected that each point is equivalent to roughly 10 hours of study, although this depends on the individual student. This means for a 30-point paper you would be expected to commit to around 300 hours of study per semester, or roughly 15-20 hours of study per week. Before enrolling, please feel free to talk to the postgraduate coordinator or academic staff member about this before committing to study as we have found forward preparation makes a big difference to study. In the first instance contact the postgraduate coordinator: primarycare.distance@otago.ac.nz

I am new to academic study. What supports do you have in place for me?

We offer a range of online support sessions via Zoom videoconference once a week in the evening just before the start of the semester and continuing over several weeks. We also offer free access to the dedicated study support online e-learning portal (GENA700.) Furthermore there is support available from the course convenors and administrators as well as support from our Reference Library staff and an on-campus Learning Support Advisor who can provide support one-on-one via videoconference.

2.For nurses, paramedics pharmacists, etc, we can send you a letter verifying the number of hours studied.
