Welcome to the 150th anniversary of the University of Otago! We are delighted you are coming to join us and hope you will enjoy our 150th programme of celebrations. We have a wide range of events planned and the weekend has been designed so you can choose which options appeal to you.  Please register early as some events are limited (due to capacity) and we will be processing registrations on a first-in-first served basis.

150th Anniversary Commemorative Pack Friday 31 May 2019 at 4:00pm (4hrs) NZ$65.00pp

The pack includes a copy of the recently written history “Otago, 150 Years of New Zealand’s First University”, a commemorative lapel badge, a name tag, map, weekend programme and other University related material. 

It can be collected on Friday night from the Union Common Room, between 4.00pm and 8.00pm.

150th Exhibition Opening, Otago Museum Friday 31 May 2019 at 7:00pm (2hrs) FREE

The exhibition is open to all and showcases 150 years of research, creative works and their benefits to our global community.

The Exhibition will run from Friday 31st May 2019 – October 2019.

Campus tours, Clocktower Building Saturday 1 June 2019 at 10:00am (2hrs) FREE

Please indicate if you are interested in a tour and we will contact you regarding your allocated time. Campus maps are available for those wanting to do their own tour and volunteers will be on hand to assist with directions and which buildings will be opened.

Academic Procession Saturday 1 June 2019 at 1:30pm (30mins) FREE

We encourage you to join us on the Academic Procession from the Dunedin School of Dentistry to the Town Hall.  Graduates are welcome to hire academic dress for the occasion.

This would be at an additional cost and you would need to contact regarding your appropriate regalia, payment and collection arrangements.

Official Convocation Ceremony, Dunedin Town Hall Saturday 1 June 2019 at 2:00pm (2hrs) FREE

A formal gathering recognising and celebrating the Univeristy of Otago's academic achievements.

Reserved seating has been allocated upstairs for alumni, friends and family. Seating downstairs has been reserved for guests with mobility requirements.

Anniversary Dinner, Dunedin Town Hall Saturday 1 June 2019 at 7:00pm (5hrs) NZ$125.00pp

As we have no indication of how many guests will be attending the dinner, it may be held in two rooms; the Dunedin Town Hall and the adjacent Glenroy Auditorium. Guest reservations will be handled in a first come first served basis.

Some tables will be reserved, the rest of the table seating plan will be general seating. 

The dinner price includes the Anniversary Dinner and beverages on the night.

Church Service, Knox Church Sunday 2 June 2019 at 10:00am (1hrs) FREE

A celebratory service at which everyone is welcome will be held at Knox Church. The service will consist of Maori and Pasifika welcomes, readings, a massed choir and conclude with a release of doves from the Knox Church garden. 

After the service, the Staff Club and other local cafes will be open for morning tea, brunch and light lunches. The Staff Club will also be offering a Devonshire tea for those who have pre-booked.

Cameron Shield, University Oval Monday 3 June 2019 at 2:00pm (2hrs) FREE

A well established rivalry exists between Selwyn College and Knox College who battle it out on the rugby field for the infamous Cameron Shield.

The recently published history “Otago, 150 Years of New Zealand’s First University” was researched and written by Dr Ali Clarke, and is full of fascinating stories from our first 150 years. This can be purchased on the registration form and can be collected at the University Bookshop.

The Development & Alumni Relations Office will comply with the Privacy Act 1993 in the collection, storage, use and disclosure of personal information.

Personal information held within the 150th Celebrations register will only be accessed and used for legitimate University purposes in accordance with the University's policy on access to, and use of, personal information.

Cancellation and refund policy

Cancellation of registration up until 31st March 2019 will result in a full refund except for an administration fee of $50.00. After 31st March 2019, no refund will be applied.

The University reserves the right to cancel an event due to insufficient attendance or other unforeseen circumstances, in such cases fees will be refunded in full.

In the event of unforeseen circumstances (weather or otherwise) that disrupt the events planned, the 150th event organisers accept no responsibility.

The information on the 150th Celebration website and in the printed material is correct at the time of publication.  However, the anniversary organisers reserve the right to change information if required and to adjust the programme accordingly.
