The Centre for Research on Colonial Culture and the Australasian Victorian Studies Association are excited to host the conference and we hope you can join us for a thought-provoking and stimulating event.
The conference will run in conjunction with the city’s heritage festival, combining an academic programme with a range of public events.
The University of Otago, Te Whare Wānanga o Otāgo, established in 1869, shares its founding year with many historical milestones, including:
- The first issue of Nature journal
- The publication of the periodic table
- The discovery of the beta cells of the pancreas that produce insulin by Paul Lanngerhans
- The publication of John Stuart Mill’s ‘The Subjection of Women’
- The opening of the Suez Canal

As part of the University of Otago’s commemoration activities marking our 150th anniversary, the Centre for Research on Colonial Culture and the Australasian Victorian Studies Association are co-sponsoring a conference organised around the theme of 1869.
