SUMMARY:Megacrysts, orbs and pretty maps: Using crystal orientations to unpick crystal clustering processes
DESCRIPTION:
A seminar presented by Charlotte Gordon, University of Cambridge.
Clusters are everywhere you look in igneous rocks, from simple plagioclase clusters through to immensely complex orbicular structures. Many processes can lead to cluster formation, and identifying which of them were at work in any given rock can unlock key petrogenetic information.
We use crystal orientations derived from EBSD (electron backscatter diffraction) to characterise some of the processes that bind crystals together, focusing on megacrystic granites from Yosemite in the USA and orbicular rocks from Karamea in New Zealand.
This seminar is also available via Zoom – https://bit.ly/otagogeology
