Diatoms are microscopic, siliceous algae found in high abundances throughout the Southern Ocean. Their frustules are well-fossilized and well-documented in marine sediments. Highly diverse and specialized to different environmental conditions, diatom assemblages are frequently used as proxies for paleo-environmental reconstructions. 
Here, we explore the use of statistical transfer function methods as a tool for quantitative sea surface temperature reconstructions from IODP 383 Site U1539 in the Pacific Sector of the Southern Ocean. In combination with diatom assemblage data and geochemical proxies, this method is a valuable tool for paleo-environmental reconstructions.
