SUMMARY:Helen Beaglehole – Light and Reflections: The house and the art in our lives
DESCRIPTION:Join writer, editor, and historian Helen Beaglehole for a fascinating talk about her recently published book. 'Light & Reflections'. This is a tour through the Beaglehole house in Karori, a house filled with an extraordinary collection of contemporary New Zealand art and the family who put it together it over two generations and nearly ninety years. It’s a story that is both quietly domestic and culturally significant – for while much has been written about our leading artists, little has been documented of the lives of their work in private collections and the people who live alongside them. A review in 'Art New Zealand' commented: "The rewards of 'Light and Reflections' are many and rich. Beaglehole writes with wit, a warm restraint and the kind of perception that comes from decades of living with and looking at the things around her: Books, art, furniture, curtains, rugs, windows, views weather, sunlight and other people. Matthew O’Reilly’s photography is beautifully subjective and expressive. This is a tour de force". Helen has long been interested in writing. As a small child she turned out stories such as the 'Life of a Sparrow', and for several years worked as a public sector policy analyst in a range of government departments and organisations. She has written eight books for children and young adults. Some of these gained prizes, three were published overseas. Her focus changed as her family grew older and she moved to New Zealand history, beginning with the highly acclaimed work on the establishment of New Zealand’s coastal lighthouses. That was followed by a study the lives of the lighthouse keepers and their families, then a history of New Zealand’s rural firefighting. 'One Hundred Havens Settlement in the Marlborough Sounds' was published in 2022. Her latest work, 'Light and Reflections' was published a year later, in 2023. When not writing, Helen reads, cycles, tramps, listens to music, and spends time with friends. She and her husband Tim were keen sailors, and with their children and later their grandchildren in their yacht Cape Resolution, they notched up decades of coastal sailing in the Cook Strait region, as well as other coastal passages including a circumnavigation of New Zealand.
