SUMMARY:2024 Distinguished Research Medal lecture
DESCRIPTION:Who is my neighbour? Grappling with moral distance and healthIn New Zealand, the term postcode lottery refers to the uneven access to health services by location. But what about the country code lottery? None of us chooses the country we were born into, yet that fact dramatically shapes risk for illness and premature death. This lecture will explore the implications of the principle that human lives have equal value and consider responsibilities to those beyond national borders. The University of Otago Distinguished Research Medal Lecture is the University's highest research honour, and is awarded annually for outstanding scholarly achievement. The 2024 recipient is Professor John A Crump (Otago Global Health Institute). The lecture will conclude with the Vice-Chancellor Grant Robertson presenting Professor Crump with the 2024 Distinguished Research medal, followed by light refreshments. All welcome.
