SUMMARY:Dan and Gwen Taylor Fellow Lecture: Is there something in the water? Conspiracy theories and conspiracy theory theory in the Antipodes
DESCRIPTION:Is there something in the water? Conspiracy theories and conspiracy theory theory in the AntipodesM R. X. Dentith (Beijing Normal University) What is it about the philosophers down under and their belief that—contra so many of their fellow academics elsewhere—we can’t just assume that conspiracy theories generally are just mad, bad, or dangerous? Looking at the history of the study of conspiracy theories in both Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia (as well as some insights from non-philosophers in both nations) what emerges is a story of conspiracy, conspiracy theories and conspiracy theory theory (the increasingly interdisciplinary study of conspiracy theories), a story that seems to be heading in the direction of thinking that maybe treating conspiracy theories as inherently mad, bad, or dangerous was a mistake to begin with. About M R. X. DentithM R. X. Dentith is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the International Center for Philosophy at Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai. Their chief research interests concern the epistemic analysis of conspiracy theories, rumours, fake news, and the epistemology of secrecy. In 2014 they wrote the first single author on conspiracy theory in Philosophy, The Philosophy of Conspiracy Theories. This has lead to a fruitful series of publications and special issues on the topic, as well as two edited collections: Taking Conspiracy Theories Seriously in 2018 and The Philosophy of Conspiracy Theories: Concepts, Method and Theory in 2023. They co-host 'The Podcaster’s Guide to the Conspiracy' with Josh Addison in their spare time. All attendees are welcome to a reception downstairs in the Gallery at the Staff Club, after the Taylor Fellow lecture. LivestreamView the livestream for this lecture on Tuesday, 22 July
