SUMMARY:Inaugural Professorial Lecture – Professor Priscilla Wehi
DESCRIPTION:The blue coat and scientific hopeAbout Professors Priscilla Wehi's researchProfessor Wehi will tell the story of why and how she became an interdisciplinary scientist and how wonder can underpin scientific discovery and purpose. She will take us through beech forest, to zoom in on the intricate elemental makeup of bird feathers and kurī hair, and what examination of these materials contributes to understanding past relationships. The fabric of New Zealand ecology is in a state of renewal, with different knowledges, methodologies and disciplines working together to support the protection of our world. She will discuss how research can help us find hope in a tumultous world, and why wānanga – the sharing and discussion of ideas matter. Professor Wehi’s lecture will be bilingual, with translator Te Ngaru Wehi also contributing his expertise in te reo Māori. Professor Wehi is the Co-Director of Te Pūnaha Matatini, Aotearoa New Zealand’s Centre of Research Excellence for complex systems. Her expertise lies primarily in conservation research, and she uses tools from field and experimental biology, historical ecology, social science, chemistry, and other disciplines to explore the intersection of conservation, language and culture. She has been active as a faculty member for the Homeward Bound Women in Science Leadership global initiative, but, above all, values the extended family networks and land that make Aotearoa home. This lecture will be followed with light refreshments, tea, coffee and juice. LivestreamThis event will be livestreamed from 5:25pm, Tuesday 2 September.
