DESCRIPTION:The Theology Programme has established the McKinlay-Matheson Memorial Lectures to honour two leading figures in Aotearoa New Zealand’s intellectual and theological life: Judith McKinlay, a pioneering biblical scholar, was known for her incisive feminist readings of the Hebrew Bible and her commitment to reading Scripture in dialogue with the land, people, and postcolonial realities of the South Pacific. Peter Matheson, a distinguished historian and theologian, brought a deep sensitivity to the struggles of the marginalised, weaving together scholarship, activism, and a rich understanding of Reformation history and contemporary justice movements. The inaugural lecture, “Famous, Infamous, Anonymous: Esther, Vashti, and the wife of 1 Peter 3,” will be delivered by Lynn H Cohick (PhD, University of Pennsylvania), who is Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Director of the Houston Theological Seminary at Houston Christian University. Prior to joining HCU, she served as Provost/Dean of Academic Affairs at Northern Seminary, and Provost of Denver Seminary. Cohick was Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Illinois and taught at Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology in Kenya. She has also authored several books on various early Christianity and New Testament topics.
