DESCRIPTION:The biology of building boneAbout Professor Dawn Coates's researchDawn undertook her PhD at the University of Otago followed by postdocs at AgResearch and the University of Cambridge. She is a molecular and cellular biologist with significant expertise in bone regeneration/engineering. Research has included stem cells and their interactions with bone, development of novel bone regenerative materials (granules, blocks, gels, bio-printed constructs) and additive antimicrobial therapy with silver nanoparticles, mānuka oil triketones, lactoferrin and nisin Z. In recent times her team has focused on nanoencapsulation techniques to enhance drug delivery. She also undertakes basic transcriptomic/proteomic research on deer antler growth where bone grows at up to 2 cm/day and this functions as a biomedical discovery model. In the Faculty of Dentistry at Otago, Professor Coates is the Deputy Associate Dean of Research, a senior research manager, and on the Board of the Sir John Walsh Research Institute. She leads the Dental Engineering and Tissue Regeneration programme, and heads the RAC which overviews all postgraduate research proposals in the faculty. Dawn has obtained 63 grants with over $9.3 million in funding. Over the years she has received multiple awards and this year received the IADR Women in Science Distinguished Female Mentor Award. Translational research is a strong focus with 5 patents. In total she has 92 peer-reviewed journal articles, 11 book chapters, and over 180 abstracts. She is passionate about quality supervision and has 30 PhD level completions and 9 current students. In addition, she has supervised masters', honours, elective students, summer students, and enjoyed having multiple visiting scholars and postdoctoral fellows This lecture will be followed with light refreshments, tea, coffee and juice.
