SUMMARY:Bioethics monthly seminar: Relationship-based ethics and ethics of place
DESCRIPTION:Relationship-based approaches are prominent in bioethics. This talk outlines one form of relationship-based ethics, then connects it with relationships to place. It sketches processes through which Māori became tangata whenua in these islands, then ‘we-too’ claims that later-comers have tangata whenua relationships to place too. It raises doubts about we-too theses, while also recognising some other relationships to place. It suggests some ways we can be mistaken about the relationships to place that we think we have, and it notes some processes worldwide where rival claims to relationship stakes in the ground can facilitate stakes in the heart.
