The talk presents two independent research projects, both relating to students and to formative periods in Swedish history: the struggle for European power in the 17th century and the peaceful development of a progressive welfare state in the 20th century. During both periods students were important as a potential future elite and also remarkably active as writers and authors whose careers were often promoted by literary interests, both in the 17th and the 20th century.

Professor Lars Burman and Dr Carina Burman are visiting scholars from the Department of Literature at Uppsala University – a partner within the Matariki network.
