Department of Physiology

A seminar presented by Dr Rebecca Bird, Department of Anatomy.

Students who fail and repeat papers share common experiences and lack skills to help them improve their educational experience. In 2023 we launched the “repeating student initiative”, consisting of one-on-one and group mentoring to teach missing skills to support these students to succeed. Approximately 70 per cent of students who participated passed their papers following this programme.

This talk will outline the programme and share data collected, along with suggestions about how this could be implemented in other departments.

Dr Rebecca Bird is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Anatomy, a Research Fellow in the Office of the Dean of Learning and Teaching, and a recipient of a National Teaching Award. Her research focuses on improving learning and teaching, and student outcomes, with a particular interest in transition. She is also the Kaikōkiri (co-ordinator), Division of Health Sciences, Dunedin Campus, for Kōkiri ki Tua (The Education Network).
