Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Last year as we celebrated the University of Otago’s first 150 years, we began the mahi to review and re-set the University’s strategic direction for the next 20 years.  I am now pleased to present our Vision 2040 discussion paper for your feedback.

By calling this review Vision 2040, we are recognising the need to take a longer-term strategic focus to address the significant challenges that universities everywhere are grappling with right now and will face in the future. We also want to make sure that we are poised to take advantage of the opportunities that will come our way over the next two decades.  The University’s effective response to the Covid-19 pandemic already shows that we are agile, responsive, and resilient.  Our vision for the future will build on those strengths.

To spur discussion on our key priorities for the next 20 years, we have refreshed the strategic imperatives from our current strategic framework while setting out preliminary thinking about Otago in the future.

As a valued stakeholder in the University of Otago, I welcome your views about our thinking so far and invite you to contribute to the University’s strategic direction to 2040.

Professor Harlene Hayne
Vice-Chancellor
