Master of Professional Accounting
Wanting to prepare better for a career in international development led Rachel Hutchison to complete a Master of Professional Accounting.
“I met some awesome accountants working in development overseas and thought it could be a real challenge, so I applied for the master’s with my transcript from my Bachelor of Arts and got in.”
Rachel says she social aspect of Otago’s campus made it easy to settle in.
“It's completely different from any other university. I didn't know anyone when I arrived and now I have a great network of friends. The campus is also beautiful and has great facilities.
“I started volunteering in the community outside of study and I still have a big commitment to that. I also love exploring the wider Otago region – it's so easy to get away to somewhere beautiful for a relaxing weekend – or an adventurous one – in a short time.”
Having not previously studied accounting, Rachel says the coursework was challenging but the smaller class sizes made learning easier. She now works as a taxation consultant at an accounting firm in Dunedin.
“My master’s got me this job – I think it proved to employers that I could work hard under pressure.”
