The Honours programme is an Postgraduate degree designed for students of outstanding intellectual ability who wish to undertake accounting education beyond that available in the standard BCom.
The programme is completed in a single year and is taken after completing a BCom. The year includes an independent research dissertation, extra tutorials and advice, and other privileges.
Why do an Honours degree?
An Honours degree is a way to stand out from other business graduates - allowing you to take advanced papers in specialised areas of business, investigate an area of particular interest to you through your dissertation and gives you a taste of what postgraduate study is like.
Additionally, many employers look specifically for BCom(Hons) Accounting graduates from Otago when recruiting for graduate programmes and other roles.
Admission to the Honours programme
Entrance to Honours is competitive and not all students are selected for the programme. Students are required to have a B+ average across their previous papers, especially Accounting papers.
Students apply for admission to the Honours programme after they have completed their BCom. If you are interested in the programme you are stronly encouraged to seek academic course advice early in your third year of study. The research methods paper (ACFI359) will need to be one of your 300 level papers. Honours students complete a dissertation or case study for ACCT480 as well as other elective papers. Students will be given the honours and postgraduate students handbook which has more detail on resources, dissertation preparation and assessment procedures. In addition, the Library offers much information for students preparing a thesis.
Bachelor of Commerce with Honours (BCom(Hons)) in Accounting
* Students who have previously completed ACFI 359 or an acceptable research methods papers from another university may substitute an additional paper from ACCT 401-499, BSNS 401 for ACFI 459.
These regulations apply to students commencing a BCom or BCom(Hons) from 2011.
Separate regulations exist for BCom/ BCom(Hons) students who began their degree prior to 2007.
