The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) chairs the Academic Staffing Advisory Committee which comprises senior academic representation from across the University. The Academic Staffing Advisory Committee meets most months from February to December to advise the Vice-Chancellor on staffing matters and to make decisions on those matters for which it has delegated authority.

Terms of Reference

1. To advise the Vice-Chancellor, and to make decisions under delegated authority from the Vice-Chancellor, on matters relating to academic staffing, including:

  • Appointment of academic staff (as set out in the Authority to Appoint document)
  • Academic promotion (as set out in the Academic Staff Promotions policy)
  • Confirmation of appointment
  • Awarding of titles such as Adjunct, Honorary and Visiting (as set out in the relevant policies)
  • Emeritus Professor status (as set out in the relevant policy)

2. To create and review policies, procedures and reporting relating to academic staffing, including:

  • Academic Titles
  • Academic Promotion
  • Confirmation of appointment
  • Adjunct, Honorary and Visiting titles
  • Research and Study Leave
  • Conference Leave
  • Academic performance appraisals
  • Demographic data for equity purposes

3. To maintain an overview of, and advise the Vice-Chancellor on, academic staffing matters as they relate to the aims of the University’s strategic goals and frameworks.

  • Nominee of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Division of Health Sciences, from University of Otago, Wellington or University of Otago, Christchurch
  • Nominee of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Division of Humanities
  • Nominee of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Division of Sciences

Members of the Staffing Advisory Committee are senior academic employees of the University of Otago who are experienced in academic staffing matters (for example as a Head of Department or on an Academic Promotion committee).

Members are appointed by the Vice-Chancellor in consultation with the head of each academic division.

Normally, the term of membership is three years, and may be renewed.
