Head of Food Science Department, Prof Indrawati Oey, is leading a team from the Food Science and Pharmacology and Toxicology Departments from the University of Otago and AgResearch. The research is to create edible wrapping created from corn and seafood by-products to provide an eco-friendly alternative to plastic in the food and animal feed industries.

Zein from corn and chitosan from shellfish could add value to the food industry by creating a transparent alternative to plastic such as wrapping meat in supermarkets and bales of hay.
