To celebrate the University’s 150th anniversary alumni and friends gathered at the New Zealand High Commission Residence in early April. This was the Vice-Chancellor’s Professor Harlene Hayne’s first visit to Fiji and she was welcomed to the event with a cultural performance by Kabu ni Vanua.

Guests were welcomed to the Residence by the Acting High Commissioner, Halia Haddad, who congratulated the University on its milestone and spoke about the importance of the partnership with the University.

Professor Hayne spoke about current developments at the University, noting that these are reflections and extensions of what the University’s founders dreamt for their university, and that alumni are a very important part of what makes the University so special.

The Chair of the Fiji Alumni Group, Dr Joji Malani entertained the audience with stories that brought back many fond memories, and encouraged guests to maintain contact with other alumni. The Vice-Chancellor and Dr Malani also exchanged gifts on behalf of the University of Otago and the Fiji Alumni Group.

Formalities were followed by time for guests to mingle and chat with the Vice-Chancellor and other alumni, and to enjoy song and dance performances from Kabu ni Vanua.
