New York alumni event October 2018

Tuesday 30 October 2018 3:03pm

Kiwi-inspired food and a very entertaining speech from Mark Simmons, chef and owner of Kiwiana restaurant in New York, set the scene for the University’s alumni event in New York at New Zealand’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

After guests were welcomed to the event by Neil Matheson, Chair of Alumni of the University of Otago in America (AUOA) Mark spoke of his journey from Makarewa to New York City and the challenges he faced becoming a restaurateur in a place far from home. As many of the attendees could relate to, he revealed that he approached whatever was presented to him with typically kiwi-styled humour.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne spoke about current developments at the University and recent highlights achieved by staff and students. She also spoke of planned events to celebrate the University’s 150th anniversary and invited guests to come back to Otago to join the celebrations.

Otago pride was clearly on display as alumni and guests relived memories, rekindled connections, and forged new bonds with fellow Otago alumni.

The Development and Alumni Relations Office thanks all guests for coming along and hope you enjoy the event photos below.
