Christchurch alumni event 2020

Tuesday 3 March 2020 10:11am

A warm summery Christchurch evening greeted 100 alumni and guests to the Ilex Function Centre on February 20. This was the first of Otago’s alumni events for 2020 and as always showcased the breadth and diversity of the pathways of those who have at some stage called Otago home.

Professor David Murdoch, Dean and Head of Campus, University of Otago, Christchurch welcomed everyone and provided an update of current developments and changes at the University along with much anticipated information about the new University building in Christchurch.

To continue the Christchurch focus we were fortunate to have Otago alumnus, Mr Steve Anderson, CEO Foodstuffs South Island speak about his experience leading through the crises of the Canterbury and Kaikoura earthquakes.

Steve’s background in geology and business may have once seemed an unusual combination, but during the earthquakes he was able to draw on his knowledge and skills from both disciplines to navigate the business through the days, weeks, and months following the initial earthquakes.

His presentation lead the audience through his seven critical areas of response from gathering data to being prepared, showing how the company negotiated its way through unprecedented times.

Our thanks to Steve for sharing his insights and expertise with us, and to all our alumni who attended to rekindle the Otago spirit.
