Samoa alumni event 2019

140 alumni, friends and distinguished guests gathered at Apia’s Aggie Greys for a dinner to celebrate the University’s 150th anniversary.

MCs Tofilau Nina Kirifi-Alai, Manager of the Pacific Islands Centre and To’oto’oolea’ava Dr. Fanaafi Aiono-Le Tagaloa, President of the Samoan Alumni Network, La o Samoa welcomed guests to the event and set the festive tone of celebrations.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne spoke about the University past, present and future, acknowledging the large contribution that our alumni from Samoa have made to the University. She also noted those alumni who travelled to Dunedin for the Pacific 150th celebrations and thanked them for making the journey.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Fiame Dr Naomi Mataafa proposed a toast to the University on its occasion of its 150th anniversary and the Patron of La o Samoa Hon. Tapusatele Le Mamea Dr Ropati Mualia entertained the guests with memories of time spent at Otago.

The University saluted the pioneers who were among the first students to study at Otago from Samoa with a special pinning of 150th badges from Professor Hayne and Professor Nicholson.

The final formality was the cutting of the three 150th cakes by Professor Hayne, Afioga Mualia and Fiame Mataafa.

Guests were also treated to live music and the opportunity to connect with each other and speak with University staff.

A huge thank you to La o Samoa for all their wonderful work in organising such a wonderful event.
