Associate Professor Anita Gibbs’ presentation on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) was the drawcard for the alumni event held at University of Otago House in Auckland at the end of October. Anita is the recipient of Critic and Conscience of Society Award 2020 and received the award for her tireless advocacy raising the profile of FASD in New Zealand.
An interested group of alumni attended the event to hear her speak on her research, and to have their questions answered about the impact of FASD on various aspects of society. Associate Professor Gibbs delivered the strong message that FASD is a neuro-disabilty and the expectation that those who live with the disability can easily change their behaviour needs to be re-examined.
Guests were able to also speak with Anita individually and also took the opportunity to connect with each other.
