The University of Otago was delighted to be able to hold an alumni event at Merton College at the University of Oxford. Alumnus of the University, Professor David Paterson, was host for the lunch event and warmly welcomed everyone to one of Oxford’s oldest colleges which dates back to the 1200’s.
It was a fabulous privilege to be able to celebrate Otago’s 150th anniversary with alumni in such a beautiful setting. Otago’s history is but a mere dot on Merton College’s. However, guests were able to enjoy a shared understanding of the importance of the past, and of the influence of those who have gone before them.
Guests heard from the Chancellor, Dr Royden Somerville, QC, who spoke about the history of the establishment of the University and its early days, and from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Harlene Hayne, who focused on where the University sits today speaking about current developments, successes in teaching and research, and plans for the future.
The lunch was a wonderful opportunity for alumni to share memories and stories of time spent at Otago, with each other and to communicate thoughts about Otago’s future.
