Winning the University of Otago Research Group Award for 2019 provided the BEATS Research Team with a wonderful opportunity to host the 4th biennial BEATS Symposium in Dunedin on 18 February 2020.
At this symposium, Professor Richard Blaikie (Deputy Vice Chancellor Research & Enterprise, University of Otago) presented the University of Otago Research Group Award 2019 to the BEATS Research Team.
The BEATS team was delighted to welcome 60 delegates from multiple sectors to this symposium and share findings from an exciting 7-year research journey to date.
BEATS Symposia have been used as one of many avenues to communicate the BEATS Research findings to the wider community and to engage with our stakeholders. Findings shared at this symposium were relevant to academia, government, public health, urban design, the transportation and environment sectors.

In addition to sharing BEATS findings, this symposium featured presentations from three invited speakers:
- Professor John Spence (University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada)
- Associate Professor Melody Smith (University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand)
- Assistant Professor Ricardo Brandão de Oliveira (Rio de Janeiro State University, Rio de Jaiero, Brazil)
We would like to thank all who came along to share this special day with us. We hope you gained new insights, got inspired and met new (and old) friends. We look forward to continuing to work together in the upcoming years and leading the way in interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaborations.
