Ruth NapperDr Ruth Napper is investigating the role of binge-like exposure to alcohol during development on acute and long-term changes in the structure and function of the brain.

Maternal abuse of alcohol during pregnancy is known to be harmful to the developing fetus and may result in long-term damage to the brain which, in turn, impacts behaviour. Dr Napper also suspects that alcohol abuse during early adolescence alters the maturation of the brain leading to long-term structural and functional changes.

Animal models are used to assess the impact of binge ethanol exposure during fetal and adolescent brain development. Both the precise timing of alcohol exposure, with respect to the stage of brain development, and the blood alcohol concentration achieved during alcohol exposure are variables under investigation. These variants are considered to be crucial determinants of whether or not permanent brain damage will occur. The structure of defined brain regions is investigated using stereological (quantitative) techniques and immunohistochemical methods. Behavioural tests are used to determine whether alcohol-induced structural brain damage leads to changes in behaviour.
