Professor Paul Smith is interested in tinnitus and balance disorders, the vestibular and auditory systems and how damage to them can result in plastic changes in the brain. His laboratory studies the effects of vestibular and auditory damage on the brainstem vestibular and cochlear nuclei and on other areas of the central nervous system such as the cerebellum and medial temporal lobe.

He is currently funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand, the Marsden Fund, the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand and the Jean Cathie Estate.
