Professor Kurt Krause, Director of the Webster Centre for Infectious Diseases, describes five things that can be done to help combat antimicrobial resistance:

  • Only take antibiotics when they're needed, and don't stop taking them until the course is complete.
  • Keep track of where resistant bugs are emerging, and make sure doctors stay informed.
  • Only use antibiotics in animals to treat infections, not to assist growth and weight gain.
  • Support and fund research into new antibiotics.
  • Understand we have more bacteria on our bodies than our own cells, and that taking antibiotics kills both bad and good bacteria.
