Pupils of Portobello School recently sent Otago Biochemistry some fantastic portraits of scientists as thanks for sharing some biochemistry fun with the school.

Seven drawings by primary school children of scientists.

Back in October, a group of staff and students from the department visited Portobello and Macandrew Bay primary schools to introduce the kids to biochemistry.

Read the story about the visit here.

They showed the children how to build models of molecules, use pipettes to measure out precise volumes of liquid, look at different types of cells under the microscope, and extract DNA out of a banana.

The visiting staff and students felt they also learnt a lot from hanging out with the children. One staff member commented, “It was wonderful to see the kids so engaged with the activities, and we were really impressed with their ideas and enthusiasm”.

Two photos of primary school children using microscopes and pipettes.
