Associate Professor Alan Carne's investigations into new health-promoting biomolecules from agriculture and fisheries by-products received a boost recently, with the award of $100,000 towards new research equipment from Lottery Health Research.
Assoc Prof Carne and his collaborators from the departments of Food Science and Microbiology and Immunology are aiming for New Zealand agricultural/fisheries resources to be better used, while benefiting New Zealand's economy.
Using the grant, they have purchased an ÄKTA Pure chromatography system and a partnered ÄKTA FluxTM 'cross flow filtration' instrument from GE Healthcare Life Sciences.
The new equipment will be used to separate out complex mixtures of potentially health-promoting proteins, peptides and pigments from various agricultural/fisheries natural product materials.
