Biochemistry research at Otago: Genetic and molecular basis of disease

Understanding how our cells operate, both normally and when diseased, is essential to developing new ways to overcome disease. These research groups use a variety of approaches to understand how disease occurs, including molecular genetics and bioinformatics, protein structural biology and cell biology techniques.

Our researchers study many different human diseases, from those of the metabolism (such as gout, cardiovascular disease, and redox signaling regulated diseases) through to those caused by infectious microbes (ranging from the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, through to norovirus and Trichoderma fungi).
