Research summaryUnderstanding the anxious brain

Research

We are so sad that we have to note here that our friend and colleague, Gina Forster, passed away on the 23rd of December after a brief battle with cancer. She was a gifted and caring teacher, a talented researcher and wonderful mentor who will be missed by many. Kia okioki ia i runga i te rangimarie, may she rest in peace.

Research in the Forster Group is focused on elucidating neurobiological mechanisms that underlie anxiety states in the context of brain trauma, stress and substance use. We use rodent models of these phenomena, utilising a variety of in vivo neurochemical recording techniques in conjunction with immunohistochemistry, hormone assays and behavioural methods.

We also apply this basic research to studies of at-risk human populations, utilising neuroimaging methods along with neuropsychological assessment and hormone and cytokine assays. By doing so, we hope to ultimately improve the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders and brain injury.
