Research

Tinnitus, a complex disorder, results from sentient cognisance of a sound without an external auditory stimulus. It is reported in children, adults, and older populations. Patients suffering from tinnitus often present with hearing loss, anxiety, depression, and sleep disruption in addition to hissing and ringing in the ear.

Human imaging study shows that tinnitus affects both auditory and limbic regions, and the interplay between the auditory-limbic system may be central to understanding and perhaps therapeutics for persistent tinnitus.

Using electrophysiological, imaging and behavioural approaches in rodents, my research brings attention to the role of synaptic plasticity in the limbic system such as the hippocampus, amygdala and others (and its interaction with the auditory system) in tinnitus development.
