Dean's Welcome - Busy Year Ahead
Welcome to the first newsletter from the Otago Business School for 2012. It promises to be a busy year with the School up for re-accreditation with EFMD, the European business school accreditation agency. We’ve asked for your help with the survey attached to this newsletter – I hope you can give us some feedback.
Also this is PBRF year – when academic staff are assessed to determine where their research is sitting compared with colleagues around the country. The process has funding implications and also acts as an impetus for staff to maintain their research excellence.
This year we have welcomed a new chair to our Business Advisory Board. Vanessa Stoddart (BCom, LLB (Hons) ) is Group General Manager People and Technical Operations at Air New Zealand. Before joining Air New Zealand she was Chief Executive of Carter Holt Harvey Packaging in Australia. I am looking forward to the continuing challenges the board makes to the School, and also thank former Chair Lindsay Brown for his input over the last seven years.
Students arrived back for the new academic year in late February, and have already had a range of visitors sharing their business experiences with them. We are always looking for successful business people – and that means in any tranche of business – to share their experiences with students. In the first two weeks of this year we have had people from World Vision and the American Federal Reserve speaking. Sir Eion Edgar is booked in for April 20. Would you like to come and share your experiences? Please contact Claire Ramsay or phone 03 479 4016 if you would like to join us.
As the New Zealand and world economy continues its sluggishness, I wish you every success in your endeavours wherever in the world this finds you. I would love to hear from you – you can contact me directly.
Professor George Benwell
Dean, Otago Business School
