Dunedin – A Special Report

Dunedin is a mixing pot of scholarship, business innovation and local government.

"Dunedin is ultimately a university city," says Professor George Benwell, the Otago Business School Dean.

"This aspect of the city’s character brings an invigorating range of ideas and expertise to the city. The interaction between young minds and experienced researchers helps the University and Dunedin city punch above its weight internationally."

Professor Benwell says the Business School is building strong relationships with local and national businesses, as well as with world-class business schools around the globe.

"The local business community, including the City Council and Chamber of Commerce, support those who wish to develop businesses or remain in the city after graduation," he says.

"Synergies between the University and the wider community exist at every level. Business owners and local landlords welcome students to Dunedin as they contribute significantly to the local economy. The University is the largest employer in Dunedin and the salaries and wages earned are redistributed into local business."

The local business community also benefits from research undertaken by students or academics. Students often need to complete practical projects as part of their degree and, as a result, local businesses and not-for-profit organisations benefit from free consulting. This adds value to the community and also the students involved.

Local business involvement also benefits students with Dunedin business people acting as business mentors to students, sitting on judging panels for business competitions, speaking to classes and providing practical internship opportunities and insights into real businesses.
