Otago Business School Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Robin Gauld will make history when he takes over the presidency of the Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS) in November.

Professor Gauld will be the Association's second president to come from Otago – former OBS Dean Professor George Benwell stood down at the end of 2015 after two one-year terms. It will be the first time the AAPBS has had two presidents from one business school.

“Otago was a founding member of AAPBS,” Professor Gauld says.

“To be the second president voted in from Otago is something the University and Otago Business School can be proud of; it shows the respect within which we are held within the region.

“Of course, this also gives Otago the ability to provide representation at this important regional level as well as internationally.”

The AAPBS was established in 2004 and has about 180 business school members. Its primary purpose is to provide leadership and representation to advance the quality of business and management education in the Asia-Pacific region.

Professor Gauld has been an active member and “strong supporter” of the Association since he took Professor Benwell's place four years ago. He is looking forward to “making a difference for members”.

“That includes growing the Association,” he says.

“We also need to develop a strategy for how we increase our capacity, visibility and influence globally and, in this, for our business schools to work more closely with one another.

“Our region represents one of the most important areas in terms of business development and global economy. We need to ensure that we are well represented in Europe and North America and that we have representation and collaboration with key groups such as the two accreditation bodies.”

Professor Gauld takes over the presidency for a two-year period, from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University Executive Dean Kenji Yokoyama.
