Associate Professor Aitken – the Head of the Department of Marketing - was elected to the Board of ConsumerNZ in June 2019. He has been temporary chairman since March, following the departure of the incumbent.

He says he was elected on a platform committed to reviewing the strategic direction of the organisation and the prioritisation of issues related to sustainability and data protection.

“I'm also committed to supporting an increase in the number of campaigns that ConsumerNZ pursue on behalf of New Zealanders following the success of recent, and continuing, examples such as the false claims made by sunscreen producers and the complicated policies around travel refunds.

“The importance of campaigns such as these, is that not only do they champion consumers' rights and provide consumers with protection, but they also draw attention to inequalities and oversights in legislation that need to be addressed.

“As I make clear in my teaching in the OBS, businesses can do well by behaving well, and ConsumerNZ will help to make sure that they do.”
