Associate Professor Ros Whiting’s dedication and contribution to accountancy has received international recognition.

Associate Professor Ros Whiting has had her “outstanding contribution and achievement to the profession of accountancy” awarded with an internationally-recognised Fellowship.

Associate Professor Whiting is one of 188 people from seven countries to receive the 2018 Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) Fellowship. She was selected for her service and participation with distinction to CA ANZ, and for teaching, research and writing within the field of accountancy that reflects positively on the profession.

As well as being deputy head of Accountancy and Finance, Associate Professor Whiting is a member of the CA ANZ Local Leadership Team and Dunedin Community Accounting.

A previous member of the CA ANZ Fellowship Committee, Associate Professor Whiting is complimentary of the programme, but humble when she speaks of her own achievements.

"We do a lot of ground work before these students get into these grad roles. To get that recognition that our hard work matters, that’s pretty cool."

“It is nice for me, it’s nice recognition, but that’s not why I do these things,” she says.

Instead, she considered her Fellowship as a positive for other groups.

“I think it’s really nice for academics to get [the Fellowships]. We do a lot of ground work before these students get into these grad roles. To get that recognition that our hard work matters, that’s pretty cool.”

She is one of four Otago recipients, another of whom is also female.

“Accountancy is traditionally a male-dominated industry, so it’s good to see 50 per cent of the new Otago Fellows are female.

“We now have a 50:50 male female split of students here, so hopefully in a few years’ time we’ll see that same split when it comes to awards and things like this.”

Accountancy and Finance Head of Department Professor David Lont, who has previously received the Fellowship along with Professor Ralph Adler, says being awarded the Fellowship is significant.

“Few chartered accountants are awarded such an honour," he says. "This is also the first time we have had three Fellows in the department at one time and shows the esteem we are held in by the profession. The awarding of this recognition is further evidence of the outstanding quality of our staff."

CA ANZ president Jane Stanton says the award reflects the high esteem in which the recipients are held within the profession.

Associate Professor Whiting will be officially awarded her Fellowship at a ceremony in March.
