Ambro Lynch

The combination of a Management major and Entrepreneurship minor that comprised Ambro Lynch's BCom (Hons) was formed through his interest in business strategy and innovation.

“I felt as though the management major would give me a fundamental understanding of core management practices, and the entrepreneurship minor would complement it by offering unique insight into business development, including scaling-up of businesses. This pairing enabled me to tailor my study to a personalised learning outcome.”

That personalised learning was one of that aspects of studying at the Otago Business School that Ambro enjoyed most.

“The class group consolidated in size significantly, leaving students that had identified specific areas of interest within commerce, while having a knowledge base in common. From here we could all pursue our own projects, while having a tight pool of other students to lean on for navigating technical problems or bouncing ideas off.”For Ambro, Otago's strong sense of community was central to his university experience.

“My first year, at Selwyn College, was a blast – a work-hard, play-hard type of scenario. Moving into new flats around Dunedin at the start of each year after the summer break was always exciting with anticipation of another year ahead, and returning to graduate the year after finishing it was great to see a heap of familiar faces and celebrate completing four years of study.”

After graduating, Ambro spent a year in Auckland production planning for export in the industrial sector, prior to heading overseas for a year of travel in South and Central America. Since then he has been based in Japan contracting and learning business systems in the import/export sector. Ambro believes that his Otago programme left him well-prepared for a career in management.

“The combination of study gave me an understanding of business operations from a management perspective. In my career to date this has been helpful in quickly identifying and contributing to businesses' needs and seeing the full picture, which has provided opportunities for interesting and unique roles.”

For anyone considering the programme, Ambro believes it is a great choice.

“This course will offer you a strong foundation of management knowledge with the opportunity to explore in depth an area of interest within the field. The course has a good variety of paper and assessment structures that are supported by motivated lecturers. I would definitely recommend it.”
