Director of Campus Development

Tanya is accountable for the strategic planning and delivery of the Strategic Capital Works program – the biggest investment in planning and capital projects in the University’s history.

Tanya Syddall has 23 years’ experience in the building engineering and construction industry in Australia and more recently in New Zealand. She has a breadth of knowledge in delivering complex capital projects with extensive experience in the health and education sectors and a passion for developing high performing and collaborative teams.

Tanya has been a client-side Project Manager for a global engineering firm and worked for Mater Health Services Brisbane where she held the role of Director Capital Works responsible for the planning and delivery of Mater’s capital works program over several hospital campuses. Tanya holds a Bachelor of Urban Development majoring in Construction Management from the Queensland University of Technology.

Tanya relocated to New Zealand in February 2019 to lead the project team as Project Director for the University of Otago’s Christchurch Campus Redevelopment Project. In February 2021 Tanya moved to Dunedin with her family to take on her new role as Director of Campus Development.

Strategic Architect

Gordon managed a multi-discipline design studio in Edinburgh for a decade – as Associate Director at Space Solutions – where he was responsible for the office’s commercial success, as well as running many of the projects. Gordon has a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the University of Edinburgh, and 15 years’ post-qualification experience.

Gordon is the University’s Strategic Architect and leads the Strategy and Planning team in Campus Development comprising of the resource planner/policy adviser and building services engineer.

Gordon and his Kiwi wife emigrated to her home city of Dunedin in 2018.

Jon previously worked in design and project engineering roles for consultants and contractors in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Jon has a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in mechanical engineering from the University of Canterbury and a Master of Business Administration and Diploma for Graduates (economics) from the University of Otago.

Jon provides advice on the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical services in the University's buildings and campus infrastructure.

This includes preparing the University's design guidelines for building services, contributing to feasibility studies and briefings for new projects, and carrying out technical reviews of procurement, design and installation on capital projects. Jon also provides advice and design support to the Property Services Division for its building and infrastructure adaptions.

Anshi worked with Larsen & Toubro Limited, India’s largest construction company for 6 years prior to joining University of Otago in 2019. Anshi has experience in the fields of contracts and tender management for construction projects. She holds a Bachelor in Civil Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Surat (India).

Anshi provides professional coordination for the Christchurch Campus Redevelopment Project, and is keen to build her career in the project management field. Apart from this, she is also a passionate dancer, and ardent reader.

Jamie is the University’s Project Director for the Faculty of Dentistry developments in Dunedin and Auckland.

Jamie has guided the new Faculty of Dentistry development in Auckland and is also directing the delivery of the Dunedin School of Dentistry Redevelopment.

Beth has worked at the University of Otago for nearly 10 years, in a range of roles across different divisions.

Beth started with Campus Development as a Project Coordinator in 2017 and has worked exclusively on the Dental programme.

Beth provides professional coordination and support to the Campus Development Division project team working on the Dunedin School of Dentistry Redevelopment and the new Faculty of Dentistry development in Auckland.

Tim worked in professional rugby for nearly 20 years as a player, coach and manager but also has a background in construction, having worked in a family construction company between various jobs in rugby. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Otago.

Tim started at the University in 2017 initially focusing on the procurement of furniture, fittings and equipment for the major building projects. Since 2018 Tim has been managing the refurbishment of the University’s iconic Clocktower building.

During more than 20 years in the construction industry, Simon has managed complex multi-million-dollar projects – from planning to delivery – in a range of sectors, including health care, corrections, university research laboratories, commercial and industrial.

Simon has a Master of Construction Management from Auckland University of Technology, and a National Certificate in Carpentry from the Otago Polytechnic.

At Otago he has worked on the Hayward College Refurbishment and is currently leading the University’s Programme of new and refurbished Colleges.

Simon uses his practical skills to add value to projects, enjoys creating solutions to difficult challenges, and believes in treating everyone fairly and honestly.

Christian studied Building Surveying at Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford and is a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. After moving to Dunedin from the UK in 2007, Christian has developed projects for the Otago Regional Council and Presbyterian Support.

Since Christian joined the University in August 2010, he has delivered several notable projects, including the Plaza Building, Marsh Study Centre, Te Pā childcare centre, Central Campus Landscape improvements, Mellor Laboratories, St David II Refurbishment and new laboratory facilities at Portobello for the Department of Marine Science.

Steven has been a client-side and construction Project Manager for a host of multi-million dollar projects around the world - including in Asia and Russia - and has a Master's degree in Project Management from the Queensland University of Technology.

Since joining the University in January 2018, Steven has delivered a purpose-built facility for the School of Performing Arts. He is currently working on refurbishments for the Department of Food Science and the School of Physical Education.

Wes is primarily working on the Faculty of Dentistry's new Clinical Services Building and the redevelopment of the adjoining Walsh Building. He has been working on this redevelopment since concept design (2014) and his current focus is on the infrastructure and construction, decant, client commissioning and the installation and commissioning of specialist medical equipment (dental chairs, radiography and sterilisers/washers).

Wes brings to the role 11 years' client, account and production management experience in the print and large scale exhibition sectors in the United Kingdom. After emigrating to New Zealand in 2011, he worked in property management for three years before commencing work in project management.

Wes is a certified Project Management Professional.

Sanette was born in South Africa where she completed a National Architectural Diploma and practiced at several architectural firms in South Africa. She gained her Diploma in Project Management and began working in project management with Stellenbosch University.

Sanette moved to New Zealand to join Massey University as a Project Manager where she worked on the exciting Innovation Complex.

She joined the University of Otago in 2020 and is currently working on a new home for the Sciences Divisional Office.

Sanette has really enjoyed her move to Dunedin, with many aspects reminding her of South Africa. Sanette enjoys kayaking and exploring waters less travelled. Sanette enjoys watching and attending rugby matches, she is still a Stormers and Springboks fan, but will now be supporting the Highlanders (unless they play the Stormers!).

Kim began working at the University in 2015 with the Property Management Unit, where she provided administrative support. She now works alongside senior project managers as an Assistant Project Manager, supporting the delivery of the Campus Development Division's portfolio of projects.

Strategic Resource Planner

Kevin comes to the University with experience gained from Ballance Agri-Nutrients, Mercury Energy, and AECOM. He is responsible for preparing resource consent applications, appeals to both Otago Regional Council and Dunedin City Council resource planning instruments, and monitoring resource consent compliance.

Kevin’s function is to support the University’s need for resource consents, compliance, and affected party approvals. His role is to both shape the University’s strategic aspirations and assistance with short term projects.

Key tasks include: managing the resource consent process; liaising with external authorities about planning matters; advice on transport and parking planning matters; reviewing and advising on legislative developments; and, assisting in the development of policies and procedures.

Kevin is originally from Canada but has been in New Zealand for over 25 years. He enjoys new opportunities and finding agreement to issues that change brings.

Sharon is originally from the North Island and moved to the mainland just prior to commencing at the University in 2015 with Property Services in the Business Support Team.

In 2018 Sharon transferred to the Campus Development Division where she provides professional administrative support and coordination to the Director and the team members of Campus Development. Sharon contributes to the delivery of projects by providing administrative support to a number of Project Steering Committees.

Michael began with Campus Development in 2019 after completing his study at the University of Otago.

Michael provides professional administrative support to the Director and wider Campus Development team. He supports several building projects and their associated activities including secretarial duties for several formal project committees.

Michael is a keen footballer and enjoys the outdoors.
