David Perry has been involved in project management in New Zealand and Australia for more than 20 years and like all good Project Managers, he comes with a wealth of diverse experience, having previously been a senior quantity surveyor, a contractor-side Construction Manager, and a Commercial Manager for a New Zealand-based contractor. He also has extensive experience with team leadership, major campus developments, procurement, and developing project management frameworks and tools.

David grew up in Dunedin and lived in the city until he moved to Wellington for work about 30 years ago. He has also lived in Christchurch and Adelaide for his work, has shifted back to Dunedin for the Director Campus Development role, and still has a fondness for his home town.

Project Managers

All our project managers are responsible for overseeing and co-ordinating the planning, design and construction of new building, major renovations and refurbishments.

Jamie is contracted to the University as Project Director for the Faculty of Dentistry developments in Dunedin and Auckland.

Simon uses his practical skills to add value to projects, enjoys creating solutions to difficult challenges, and believes in treating everyone fairly and honestly.

During more than 20 years in the construction industry, Simon has managed complex multi-million dollar projects - from planning to delivery - in a range of sectors, including health care, corrections, university research laboratories, commercial and industrial.

Simon has a Master of Construction Management from Auckland University of Technology, and a National Certificate in Carpentry from the Otago Polytechnic.

Since Christian joined the University in August 2010, he has delivered several challenging, high-profile projects, including the Plaza Building, Marsh Study Centre, Te Pā childcare centre, central campus landscape improvements and new laboratory facilities at Portobello for the Department of Marine Science.

Redevelopment of the Science One Building - now named Mellor Laboratories - has been a focus since 2013. This is not only an outstanding facility but also a 'gateway' to the wider sciences precinct.

Currently, Christian is working through the final stages of the St David II redevelopment, for the University's new Shared Services Division.

He studied Building Surveying at Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford and is a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Since moving to Dunedin from the UK in 2007, Christian has also developed projects for the Otago Regional Council and Presbyterian Support.

Steven Ireland

Since joining the University in January 2018, Steven has been working on a purpose-built base for the Department of Music, Theatre and Performing Arts, refurbishing areas in the Clock Tower building for new occupants, and delivering the main AskOtago hub in The Link, along with satellite hubs.

Steven has been a client-side and Construction Project Manager for a host of multi-million dollar projects around the world - including in Asia and Russia - and has a Master's degree in Project Management from the Queensland University of Technology.

Wes Jenkins

Wes is primarily working on the Faculty of Dentistry's new Clinical Services Building and the redevelopment of the adjoining Walsh Building. He has been working on this redevelopment since concept design (2014) and his current focus is on the infrastructure and construction, decant, client commissioning and the installation and commissioning of specialist medical equipment (dental chairs, radiography and sterilisers/washers).

Wes brings to the role 11 years' client, account and production management experience in the print and large scale exhibition sectors in the United Kingdom. After emigrating to New Zealand in 2011, he worked in property management for three years before commencing work in project management.

Wes is a certified Project Management Professional.

Tanya Syddall is an ambitious Project Manager with 20 years’ experience in the building engineering and construction industry in Australia. Tanya has a breadth of knowledge in delivering complex capital projects with extensive experience in the health and education sectors. She has been a client-side Project Manager for a global engineering firm and has spent the past 4 years working for Mater Group in Queensland where she held the role of Director Capital Works.

Tanya’s passion is leading highly collaborative teams that deliver client and community focused outcomes through integrity, transparency, safety and values aligned behaviours. She also has a passion for mentoring and the advancement of women in construction. Tanya holds a Bachelor of Urban Development majoring in Construction Management from the Queensland University of Technology.

Tanya joined the University in February 2019 and is based in Christchurch to lead the project team as Project Director for the Christchurch Campus Redevelopment Project.

Tim started at the University in November 2017 as parental leave cover, focusing on the furniture, fittings and equipment component of the major building projects. He became full-time in June 2018 and is working alongside senior project managers as an assistant, supporting the delivery of the Campus Development Division's portfolio of projects.

Tim worked in professional rugby for nearly 20 years as a player, coach and manager but also has a back ground in construction, having worked in a family construction company between various jobs in rugby.

Tim has a Batchelor of Arts Degree from the University of Otago.

Gordon Roy

Gordon is a senior architect. His team comprises the resource planner/policy adviser and building services engineer.

He ran a multi-discipline design studio in Edinburgh for a decade – as associate director at Space Solutions – where he was responsible for the office’s commercial success, as well as running many of the projects.

Gordon and his Kiwi wife emigrated to her home city of Dunedin in 2018 with their two boys.

Gordon has a Batchelor of Architecture Degree from the University of Edinburgh, and 15 years’ post-qualification experience.

Kevin Wood

Kevin’s function is to support the University’s need for resource consents, compliance, and affected party approvals. His role is to both shape the University’s strategic aspirations and assistance with short term projects. Key tasks include: managing the resource consent process; liaising with external authorities about planning matters; advice on transport and parking planning matters; reviewing and advising on legislative developments; and, assist in the development of policies and procedures.

Kevin was originally from Canada but has been in New Zealand for over 25 years. He enjoys new ‘opportunities’ and finding agreement to issues that change brings.

Jon Bull

Jon provides advice on the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical services in the University's buildings and campus infrastructure. This includes preparing the University's design guidelines for building services, contributing to feasibility studies and briefings for new projects, and carrying out technical reviews of procurement, design and installation on capital projects.

Jon also provides advice and design support to the Property Services Division for its building and infrastructure adaptions.

He previously worked in design and project engineering roles for consultants and contractors in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Jon has a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in mechanical engineering from the University of Canterbury and a Master of Business Administration and Diploma for Graduates (economics) from the University of Otago.
